Der Klimawandel wird die Gesellschaft in Zukunft immer stärker beeinflussen. In der Arbeit wird untersucht, wie die direkten Auswirkungen und die daran anschließenden Klimaschutz- und Anpassungsmaßnahmen regionale Konfliktsituationen verändern können. Untersucht werden bisherige Konflikte des Tourismussektors mit anderen nicht-touristischen Akteursgruppen sowie mögliche Konfliktpotenziale durch den Klimawandel am Beispiel der Destinationen Schwarzwald und schleswig-holsteinische Nordseeküste. Qualitative Experteninterviews geben Hinweise darauf, dass besonders die Mitigations- und Anpassungsmaßnahmen, die sonst eher als Konfliktlösung eine Rolle spielen, ein bedeutendes und bisher unterschätztes Konfliktpotenzial bergen. Formelle Verfahren, aber auch eine zusätzliche informelle Beteiligung werden von den Akteuren vor Ort als Konfliktregelungsmechanismen befürwortet.
Als Fallstudie wird im ersten Paper der Einsatz der Szenarioanalyse als ein zentrales Element des Forschungsdesigns im Projekt „Sustainable University“ beleuchtet. Mit einem formalen Ansatz wurden Szenarien zum zukünftigen Umfeld der Hochschullandschaft entwickelt. Dieses Paper zeigt detailliert die notwendigen Denkschritte bei der Szenarioentwicklung auf und hilft zu verstehen, an welchen Punkten Integrationsschritte in Bezug auf Wissensarten und Perspektiven unterstützt und geleistet werden und somit auch (soziale) Lernprozesse gefördert werden können. Ferner werden die konkreten Ergebnisse der Szenarioanalyse vorgestellt und diskutiert. Zur Untersuchung von Lerneffekten wird die Methode der Szenarioanalyse in einen formalen Bildungskontext transferiert. Das zweite Paper leistet einen konzeptionellen Beitrag. Einleitend werden spezifische individuelle Kompetenzen diskutiert, die aus der Perspektive der Bildung für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung zum Umgang mit dem Klimawandel als komplexes Nachhaltigkeitsproblem und zu einer aktiven Teilnahme an Transformationsprozessen der Gesellschaft wichtig sind. Die Kompetenzen, wie proaktives Denken, der Umgang mit Unsicherheiten und unterschiedlichen Wissensbeständen sowie das vernetze Denken konnten hier beschrieben werden. Anschließend werden zwei Forschungsmethoden, der Syndromansatz und die Szenarioanalyse, für den Kontext der formalen Bildung nutzbar gemacht, und es wird theoretisch abgeleitet, wie in diesen Lernsettings die eingangs identifizierten Kompetenzen gefördert werden können. Die Szenarioanalyse bietet beispielsweise beim Denkschritt der Entwicklung von Zukunftsprojektionen großes Potential für Reflexionsprozesse oder die Integration von Wissen und Perspektiven zur Förderung der Kompetenz des proaktiven Denkens in Alternativen. Die diskursive Bewertung von Konsistenzen während der Szenarioerstellung birgt ähnliches Potential zur Förderung des vernetzten Denkens. Im dritten Paper wird ein Messinstrument für die Kompetenz des vernetzen Denkens (systems thinking) entwickelt. Es leistet einen empirischen Beitrag zur Lehr-Lernforschung, respektive zur Kompetenzmessung im Bereich der BNE. Dieses Instrument erfasst mit Hilfe eines Similarity Judgment Tests (SJT) den Grad der Vernetzung von Konzepten eines bestimmten Kontextes, in dem konkreten Fall von Aspekten des Klimawandels. In einer prä-post-Studie wurden zwei Kontroll und zwei Versuchsgruppen, die an dem zuvor genannten Lernsetting im Rahmen von Seminaren an der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg teilgenommen haben, empirisch begleitet. Auch wenn keine statistisch signifikanten Veränderungen des vernetzten Denkens der Teilnehmenden nachgewiesen werden konnten, bedeutet das nicht, dass die zuvor abgeleiteten Einflüsse der Szenarioanalyse widerlegt sind. Hier sind weitere Studien und die Weiterentwicklung des Messinstruments nötig. Zudem wurde nur ein Teil möglicher Einflüsse auf die Kompetenzentwicklung untersucht. Für die Szenarioanalyse als Lernsetting lässt sich schlussfolgern, dass zum einen der Moderation von Reflexions- und Diskussionsprozessen während unterschiedlicher Phasen eine sehr wichtige Rolle zukommt und sie einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf Lernprozesse hat. Zum anderen ist den Phasen, in denen Lernen stattfinden kann, genügend Zeit einzuräumen, so dass transdisziplinäre oder interdisziplinäre Forschungsprozesse mit der Methode Szenarioanalyse auch das Potential für Lernprozesse entfalten können. So kann mit Hilfe der Szenarioanalyse ein Setting geschaffen werden, in dem individuelle mentale Modelle und Handlungsmuster hinterfragt und Kompetenzen im Umgang mit komplexen Problemen gefördert werden, und somit individuelles und soziales Lernen für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung stattfinden kann.
This paper-based dissertation deals with the concepts of economic heterogeneity and environmental uncertainty from different perspectives, and at multiple levels of abstraction. At its core sits the observation that heterogeneity and uncertainty are deeply entangled, for there would be no uncertainty without heterogeneity of options to act regarding multiple future states of the world. At the same time, heterogeneity - in the form of diversification - has been suggested as a way to reduce uncertainty in portfolio theory (Markowitz 1952). The dissertation evolves around two research foci: (1) methodological implications of heterogeneity of scientific theories in the face of empirical data (Paper 1), and (2) two different forms of uncertainty are considered, environmental risk (Paper 2) and Knightian uncertainty (Paper 3). Paper 1 develops a new framework for model selection for the special case of fitting size distribution models to empirical data. It combines Bayesian and frequentist statistical approaches with the criterion of model microfoundation, which is to select, all other things considered being equal, the model that comes with a suitable micromodel, that explains, from the perspective of the individual constituent, the genesis of the overall size distribution. The approach is subsequently illustrated with size distribution data on commercial cattle farms in Namibia. We find that the double-Pareto lognormal distribution fits the data best. Our approach might have the potential to reconcile one of the oldest debates in current economics, i.e. the one about the best model to describe and explain the distribution of economic key variables such as income, wealth and city sizes in a country. The second paper revisits the Namibian commercial cattle farm data and uses it to put some theories from the agricultural economics literature regarding farm management under environmental risk to an empirical test. We focus on the relations between inter-annual variability in rainfall (environmental risk), risk preferences, farm size and stocking rate. We demonstrate that the Pareto distribution - which separates the distribution into two parts - is a statistically plausible description of the empirical farm size distribution when ´farm size´ is operationalized by herd size, but not by rangeland area. A statistical group comparison based on the two parts of the Pareto distribution shows that large farms are on average exposed to significantly lower environmental risk. Regarding risk preferences, we do not find any significant differences in mean risk attitude between the two branches. Our analysis confirms the central role of the stocking rate as farm management parameter, and shows that environmental risk and the farmer´s gender are key variables in explaining stocking rates in our data. Paper 3 develops a non-expected-utility approach to decision making under Knightian uncertainty which circumvents some of the conceptual problems of existing approaches. We understand Knightian uncertainty as income lotteries with known payoffs but unknown probabilities in each outcome. Based on seven axioms, we show that there uniquely (up to linear-affine transformations) exists an additive and extensive function from the set of Knightian lotteries to the real numbers that represents uncertainty preferences on the subset of lotteries with fixed positive sum of payoffs over all possible states of the world. We define the concept of uncertainty aversion such that it allows for interpersonal comparison of uncertainty attitudes. Furthermore, we propose Renyi´s (1961) generalized entropy as a one-parameter preference function, where the parameter measures the degree of uncertainty aversion. We illustrate it with a simple decision problem and compare it to other decision rules under uncertainty (maximin, maximax, Laplacian expected utility, minimum regret, Hurwicz).
Responsibility for sustainability is an action guiding concept which relates the abstract norm of sustainability with concrete action contexts. It thereby specifies what bearers of responsibility ought to do. In this thesis, I introduce the concept of responsibility to economic theory, focusing specifically on individual and governmental responsibility for sustainability. Some of the questions I examine are: how should responsibility be distributed among agents? How can agents, who are responsible for several normative aims, solve trade-offs? Do governmental policies affect individuals’ ability to assume responsibility? How can individuals efficiently induce governments to act responsibly? In Paper 1, A utilitarian notion of responsibility for sustainability, I conceptualize and formalize a utilitarian notion of responsibility for sustainability which I then relate to established normative criteria for assessing intertemporal societal choice. I show that responsibility for sustainability can be unambiguously conceptualized in economic models. Furthermore, I affirm that responsibility may provide action guidance even if the aim of sustainability is not feasible. In Paper 2, Verantwortung von Konsumenten für Nachhaltigkeit, I study consumers’ responsibility for sustainability. Particularly, I specify crucial components of this responsibility in order to analyze the relation of consumers’ private and political responsibility. I show that the responsibility for sustainability of consumers comprises three indispensable obligations of which only one concerns consumers’ consumption choices. In Paper 3, Regulation of morally responsible agents with motivation crowding, I focus on the impact of governmental policies on the motivation of an individual to assume moral responsibility. In particular, I study the regulation of a morally responsible individual with motivation crowding in the context of a negative externality. I show that combining consumption taxes with the provision of perfect information is, in many cases, superior to consumption taxes alone. In Paper 4, Endogenous Environmental Policy when Pollution is Transboundary, I examine how individuals which form lobby groups affect the determination of environmental policy when governments seek not only to maximize welfare, but simultaneous maximize support by lobby groups. More specifically, I consider the case in which two countries are linked through transboundary pollution. Environmental policies adopted by self-interested governments may be more stringent than by social welfare maximizing governments. Furthermore, due to the interaction of distortions the space of optimal policies increases: politically optimal tax rates may be too high or too low to optimally internalize the environmental externality.
Conflicts between intragenerational and intergenerational justice in the use of ecosystem services

The principle of sustainability contains two objectives of justice regarding the conservation and use of ecosystems and their services: (1) global justice between different people of the present generation ("intragenerational justice"); (2) justice between people of different generations ("intergenerational justice"). International sustainability policy attaches equal normative importance to both objectives of justice. Accordingly, environmental philosophers ethically justify that people living today and people living in the future have equal rights to certain basic goods, including ecosystems and their services (e.g. Feinberg 1981, Visser’t Hooft 2007). Whereas ideal theories of sustainability and justice do not recognize interdependencies between intragenerational and intergenerational justice, conflicts in attaining the justices possibly arise in policy implementation. Identifying and preventing such conflicts is fundamental to devise an ethically legitimate, politically consistent and actually effective sustainability policy. This dissertation systematically investigates conflicts between intragenerational and intergenerational justice in the use of ecosystem services. Human wellbeing depends on the services provided by ecosystems. Yet, humans substantially degrade world’s ecosystems, and therewith cause the loss of important ecosystem services (MEA 2005: 26ff.). The idea of sustainability demands to use ecosystem services in accordance with the two objectives of intragenerational justice and intergenerational justice. Reality, however, is far from attaining these objectives: Both today’s global poor and future persons are, resp. will be, disproportionately affected by the loss of vital ecosystem services (MEA 2005: 62, 85). Especially severe affected are the rural poor who directly depend on local ecosystem services for food, income and health. The political discourse on the relationship between the objectives of intra- and intergenerational justice in the use of ecosystem services (‘justice-relationship’) is blurred. Further, the political discourse lacks a common understanding of justice in ecosystem-use and a systematic reflection on the actual ‘justice-relationship’, such as on the factors that cause conflicts between the two justices. In this dissertation, I investigate the ‘justice-relationship’ along three central questions: • What conception(s) of justice can adequately address the distribution of access rights to ecosystem services? • How must sustainability policy be designed to enhance both intragenerational and intergenerational justice in the use of ecosystem services? • (How) Can economics be helpful for characterizing and assessing trade-offs between the two justices? I approach these questions both generally and by the example of a case study, the MASIPAG farmer network in the Philippines. Methodologically, I combine a normative and a positive analysis of the relationship between intra- and intergenerational justice in the use of ecosystem services: The normative analysis serves the explication, justification and reflection of the norms underlying the ‘justice-relationship’; the positive analysis serves the description of the ‘justice-relationship’ in the sustainability discourse and in practical contexts, as well as the provision of explanations on the determinants of the ‘justice-relationship’. As methodological approach, I apply the “comprehensive multi-level approach” as developed by Baumgärtner et al. (2008) – investigating the ‘justice-relationship’ simultaneously on the three levels of (i) concept, (ii) model and (iii) case study.
Forms of Interaction in Sustainable Supply Chain Management : An Analysis of Organisational Spheres

This PhD dissertation thesis aims to analyse and discuss how a company can interact with its supply chain stakeholders to facilitate the development of sustainable supply chains. The research is based on empirical and conceptual work and contributes to the field of corporate sustainability, supply chain management and its intersection. The thesis develops a conceptual framework to analyse four organisational spheres of interaction (inter, intra, supra and sub) in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM). Thereby, further insights into risk and opportunityoriented approaches of companies to SSCM are provided.
In den Jahren 2006 und 2007 wurden auf dem Gebiet der Lüneburger Heide nach einer Vorstratifizierung im Rahmen ausgedehnter Feldforschung Umweltdaten für die stark bedrohte Spinnenart Eresus kollari Rossi 1846 und die eurytope Spinnenart Trochosa terricola Thorell 1856 erhoben. Ziel der Arbeit war es, die Habitatbindung beider Arten zu beschreiben und Heidepflegemaßnahmen vor allem für erstere zu benennen, um zu ihrem dauerhaften Erhalt beizutragen. Außerdem sollten beide Arten auf dem gleichen Standort in ihren Habitatansprüchen verglichen werden. Mit Hilfe der vorliegenden Untersuchungen konnte die spezifische Habitatbindung von E. kollari in der Lüneburger Heide beschrieben werden. Heidepflegemaßnahmen, die dazu führen, dass die organische Auflage des Bodens gering, die Temperatur auf Höhe der Röhren der Tiere (in 10 cm Tiefe) hoch und die Heidebedeckung gleichzeitig relativ groß ist, entsprechen den ermittelten Mikrohabitatansprüchen der Art Eresus kollari. Der Nischenvergleich der stenotopen Art E. kollari mit der eurytopen Art T. terricola zeigte, dass die beiden Arten sich hinsichtlich ihrer Habitatparameter nur in den drei Faktoren ‚Bedeckungsgrad Bäume‘, ‚Dicke der organischen Auflage‘ und ‚Bedeckungsgrad Gräser‘ unterschiedlich verhalten. Dabei stellt sich der Reaktionsraum von E. kollari wie eine Teilmenge desjenigen von T. terricola dar. Unter diesem Aspekt kann E. kollari nicht nur als Leitart sondern auch als Schirmart in der Lüneburger Heide dienen. Pflegemaßnahmen wie kontrolliertes Brennen und Schoppern, variabel in Zeit und Raum angewandt, erscheinen vor dem Hintergrund der Ergebnisse der Habitateignungsmodellierung als besonders geeignet, um langfristig die Mikrohabitatansprüche für E. kollari (aber auch für T. terricola) zu sichern. Angesichts des geringen Ausbreitungspotentials von E. kollari werden vielleicht manche geeignete Lebensräume nicht besiedelt. Ein Monitoring sowie (Wieder-) Besiedlungsexperimente auf geeignet erscheinenden Flächen sollten daher für den dauerhaften Erhalt der Art im norddeutschen Raum in naher Zukunft ausgeführt werden.
Stoffstromnetzbasierte Optimalplanung des Ressourceneinsatzes industrieller Produktionssysteme

Die Steigerung ihrer Ressourceneffizienz ist heute für viele Unternehmen des produzierenden Gewerbes sowohl aus Gründen des Umweltschutzes als auch zur Steigerung ihrer Wettbewerbsfähigkeit ein wichtiges Anliegen. Als ein in vielfältiger Hinsicht geeignetes Planungsinstrument für das industrielle Energie- und Stoffstrommanagement hat sich in den letzten Jahren die in den 1990er Jahren entwickelte Methode der Stoffstromnetze erwiesen. Ihr Manko besteht hauptsächlich darin, dass bislang keine automatische Suche nach Systemkonfigurationen mit optimalem Ressourcenverbrauch möglich ist. Gängige Optimierungsmethoden des Operations Research wie die mathematische Programmierung sind hierfür prinzipiell geeignet. Aufgrund ihres hohen Abstraktionsniveaus lassen sie sich jedoch nur schwer in betriebliche Planungsprozesse, insbesondere in mittelständischen Unternehmen, einbinden. Daher wird in dieser Arbeit eine neuartige Methode für die Optimalplanung industrieller Produktionssysteme entwickelt, die die Vorteile der Stoffstromnetze mit denen der Parameteroptimierung verbindet: die stoffstromnetzbasierte Optimalplanung. Als formale Schnittstelle zwischen Stoffstromanalyse und Operations Research wird durch die Einbettung eines Stoffstromnetzes in ein Parameteroptimierungsproblem das stoffstromnetzbasierte Optimierungsproblem (SSNOP) definiert. Dabei wird deutlich, dass aus der methodischen Integration nur dann ein sinnvolles Planungswerkzeug resultiert, wenn auch die jeweiligen Modellierungsparadigmen von Stoffstromanalyse und Optimalplanung miteinander verschmolzen werden. Das SSNOP ermöglicht daher nicht nur die angestrebte Erweiterung des Stoffstrommanagements um den Aspekt der automatischen Systemoptimierung. Es induziert darüber hinaus einen Perspektivwechsel von der traditionell eher beschreibenden zu einer entscheidungsorientierten Stoffstromanalyse. Nur durch die systematische Berücksichtigung der Freiheitsgrade eines Produktionssystems in Form von vorhandenen oder potenziellen Handlungs- und Gestaltungsspielräumen entstehen Stoffstrommodelle, die gleichzeitig als Optimierungsmodelle einsetzbar sind. Weiterhin werden in dieser Arbeit konkrete Lösungsansätze für das SSNOP untersucht. In Abhängigkeit von den Eigenschaften des eingebetteten Stoffstromnetzes gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten für die Optimierung: Einerseits die algebraische Reformulierung als mathematisches Programm, welches anschließend mit analytischen Optimierungsalgorithmen gelöst werden kann, andererseits die Anwendung direkter Suchalgorithmen im Rahmen einer simulationsbasierten Optimierung. Weiterhin wird ein Optimierungsmodul für eine stoffstromnetzbasierte Stoffstromanalysesoftware konzipiert, welches beide Lösungsansätze integriert. Mittels numerischer Experimente wird schließlich die Eignung verschiedener direkter Optimierungsalgorithmen zur Lösung des SSNOP untersucht.
The role of tree diversity for individual tree growth, crown architecture and branch demography

In the light of the concurrent loss of biodiversity, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning (BEF) research attracted a great deal of attention and emerged as one of the important fields of research in ecology. Since important ecological interactions such as competition occur between individuals, the understanding of individual tree growth was considered to be fundamental for forest related BEF research. Individual tree growth is determined by the above- and belowground interactions of a tree individual with its local neighbourhood. To obtain a deeper understanding of BEF relationships, I broadened the focus from individual tree growth (usually measured as diameter or biomass increment) to the arrangement and dynamics of the above-ground modules of trees in dependence of their local neighbourhood. More precisely, the main objective of the present thesis was to analyse the impact of tree diversity on individual tree growth, crown architectural and branch demographic variables. Thereby I considered crown architectural variables as important indicators of the competition for light. In addition, crown architectural variables impacted ecosystem services such as erosion control. Furthermore, the results of the present thesis contributed to the current discussion on species coexistence theories, which may be differentiated by two opposing views: one that relies on neutral processes and one that implicates a role for meaningful differences in the ecological strategy (niche) of co-occurring species. The studied forest ecosystems were the subtropical broad-leaved evergreen forests of southeast China, which have been under high human pressure due to a long history of intensive land-use. The area is of particular interest for BEF research due to the high species richness of woody plants, including many, yet poorly studied species, and due to the rough terrain with steep slopes, which cause severe soil erosion. The present thesis combines three observational with two experimental studies, applying the local neighbourhood approach along an age gradient from tree saplings to mature trees. In the Gutianshan National Nature Reserve (GNNR), I conducted two observational studies on permanent plots which were chosen according to a space-for-time substitution design. The aim of the first study was to reveal the effects of diversity (species richness, functional diversity) together with other biotic and abiotic variables on morphological growth parameters (crown area, crown displacement and stem inclination) of target trees of four tree species (Castanea henryi, Castanopsis eyrei, Quercus serrata and Schima superba). In the second study, the same target trees together with their neighbours were used to analyse the relation between stand related functional diversity and the horizontal and vertical structure of the canopy. The third study was conducted in a young secondary broad-leaved evergreen forest. Using two target species (Castanopsis fargesii and Quercus fabri), the role of diversity, intra- vs. inter-specific competition and the mode of competition (symmetric vs. asymmetric) on the target individuals was tested by analysing five-year radial growth increments. The two other studies were carried out in an experimentally established plantation, using saplings of four tree species (C. henryi, Elaeocarpus decipiens, Q. serrata and S. superba), which were planted in monoculture, twoand four-species combinations and in three densities. The fourth study focused on mechanisms of coexistence and the role of species richness, species composition, species identity and density on sapling growth. The fifth study tested the effect of sapling density and identity on the througfall kinetic energy, which represents a measure for the erosive power of rain. It was found that functional diversity does affect crown architectural and canopy related parameters of forests in the GNNR. However, no effects of species richness on radial-growth were detected in the younger forest. Since I also did not find strong effects of species richness on saplings in the experimental plantation, diversity effects may evolve at a later age stage. The importance of the diversity effect may be related reversely to that of species identity in an age gradient of forest stands. The findings suggest that different mechanisms of coexistence operate simultaneously but that their relative importance may shift through the life stages of trees. During the sapling stage, species-specific differences in growth and architectural traits support niche theory. In older forest stands, no species-specific differences in growth parameters could be detected. However, I did find effects of functional diversity on horizontal canopy structure. I conclude that mechanisms of coexistence may not only change with forest stand age, but may also differ for distinct traits. The present thesis, being the first to apply the local neighbourhood approach with regard to crown architecture and branch demography within the BEF field of research, stresses the importance of this individual based approach. Although the observed forest systems are very complex, crown architectural and canopy structural variables were found to be affected by diversity. The finding that the degree of erosive power of rain could be elucidated by crown architectural variables, encourages further studies to reveal possible relations between biodiversity and other ecosystem functions or services, which might be mediated by crown architectural and canopy structural variables.
Human activities have converted natural ecosystems worldwide, mostly for agricultural purposes. This change in land use has been recognized as one of the key drivers causing mass extinction of biodiversity. Yet, there are species which persist particularly in traditional, low-intensity agricultural areas. However, this farmland biodiversity is increasingly threatened by the consequences of land-use intensification and land abandonment. One effect of these two processes is the change in existing landscape structures. This dissertation aimed at quantifying the relationship between biodiversity and landscape structures because a better understanding of current biodiversity patterns and their drivers is needed to navigate biodiversity conservation for a sustainable development. Specifically, this dissertation anticipates the impacts of land-use change on biodiversity in Southern Transylvania, focusing on butterflies and plants as study groups. In a first step, a methodological baseline for subsequent biodiversity studies is developed by exploring an optimal survey strategy, allocating the available resources in a study design that enables high statistical power and covers a wide range of environmental conditions. This study shows that in the highly heterogeneous farmland mosaic of Southern Transylvania, survey effort can be moderately reduced while still showing similar patterns of species richness, species turnover and species composition (Chapter 2). In a second step, biodiversity patterns of plants and butterflies are empirically investigated in response to different landscape structures, particularly towards heterogeneity and woody vegetation cover. These studies provide evidence that all main land-use types in Southern Transylvania, namely arable land, grassland and forests, contribute to an overall landscape pool. Species richness of plants, but not of butterflies, differed significantly between arable land and grassland. Presence of woody vegetation in farmland had a positive effect on plant species richness. Heterogeneity has been found beneficial for butterfly species richness in arable land, but not in grasslands. Species composition of plants was determined by land-use, but butterfly species composition was widely overlapping in arable land and grassland (Chapters 3 & 4). Investigations on the potential spread of invasive plant species in the Transylvanian landscape exhibited that distance to roads and heterogeneity, especially in arable land, were key variables determining the invasibility of the landscape (Chapter 5). By studying movement patterns of butterflies in agricultural landscapes, land-use intensity could be revealed having an impact on butterfly movements. Furthermore, butterflies were found to prefer non-arable patches within farmland (Chapter 6). In a third step, this dissertation conceptually embeds socio-economic considerations into the local and international discourse on sustainable rural development: Reflections on a participatory projects on establishing butterfly monitoring in Romania conclude that involving citizens in biodiversity conservation is possible in Romania, but need tailored approaches which consider the unique social and cultural settings (Chapter 7). Current recommendations from scientific literature to increase the agricultural yield, for example in Eastern European landscapes, through ´sustainable intensification´ for global food security are scrutinized for their engagement with sustainability. This dissertation concludes that genuine sustainable solutions need to respect the various aspects of sustainability, including procedural and distributive justice. Furthermore, it is clarified that general recommendations for agricultural intensification, for instance in Romania, may lead to devastating impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functions (Chapter 8). This dissertation provides evidence that the beneficial characteristics of the Translvanian farmland are linked to the fine spatial scale of the agricultural mosaic, the amount and distribution of semi-natural elements and the scattered woody vegetation throughout the landscape. Hence, the future of biodiversity depends on human interventions in the ancient cultural landscape. Navigating biodiversity conservation in Southern Transylvania thus needs genuine sustainable solutions, which integrate socially acceptable and ecological meaningful landscape management.
Business Models for Sustainability Innovation : Conceptual Foundations and the Case of Solar Energy

This dissertation deals with the relationships between the increasingly discussed business model notion, sustainability innovation, and the business case for sustainability concept. The main purpose of this research is to identify and define the so far insufficiently studied theoretical interrelations between these concepts. To this end, according theoretical foundations are developed and combined with empirical studies on selected aspects of the solar photovoltaic industry. This industry is particularly suitable for research on sustainability innovation and business models because of its increasing maturity paired with public policy and market dynamics that lead to a variety of business model-related managerial and entrepreneurial business case challenges. The overarching research question is: How can business models support the commercialisation of sustainability innovations and thus contribute to business cases for sustainability? A theoretical and conceptual foundation is developed based on a systematic literature review on the role of business models in the context of technological, organisational, and social sustainability innovation. Further, the importance of business model innovation is discussed and linked to sustainability strategies and the business case for sustainability concept. These theoretical foundations are applied in an in-depth case study on BP Solar, the former solar photovoltaic subsidiary of British Petroleum. Moreover, because supportive public policies and the availability of financial capital are known to be the most important preconditions for commercial success with innovations such as solar photovoltaic technologies, the solar studies include a comparative multiple-case study on the public policies of China, Germany, and the USA as well as a conjoint experiment to explore debt capital investors’ preferences for different types of photovoltaic projects and business models. As a result, the main contribution of this work is the business models for sustainability innovation (BMfSI) framework. This framework is based on the idea that the business model is an artificial and social construct that fulfils different functions resulting from social interaction and their deliberate construction. The BMfSI framework emphasises the so-called mediating function, i.e. the iterative alignment of business model elements with company-internal and external requirements as well as with the specific characteristics of environmentally and socially beneficial innovations. Against this backdrop, it becomes clear that practically-oriented knowledge based on BMfSI research might provide new and effective ways to support the achievement of corporate sustainability.
Ökologische und soziale Themen werden für Marken zunehmend erfolgsrelevant. Jedoch können Nachhaltigkeitsversprechen einer Marke zu Vertrauensvorbehalten seitens der Stakeholder führen, weshalb die Glaubwürdigkeit einer Nachhaltigkeitsmarke besonders wichtig ist. Zudem wird die Wahrnehmung einer Nachhaltigkeitsmarke heutzutage verstärkt durch Stakeholder mitbestimmt, da sie mittels Social Media eigene Inhalte verfassen und im Social Web veröffentlichen können. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde in der Dissertation erörtert, wie ein Unternehmen seine Marke durch ökologische und soziale Themen stärken kann. Außerdem wurde untersucht, wo in diesem Entwicklungsprozess soziale Medien gezielt eingesetzt werden können. In diesem Kontext wurde auch der Frage nachgegangen, wie die von Stakeholdern im Social Web verfassten Inhalte in Übereinstimmung mit einer intendierten Nachhaltigkeitsmarke gebracht und deren Kraft genutzt werden können. Zentrales Ergebnis der Dissertation stellt ein anwendungsorientiertes Modell für die systematische Social-Media-Verwendung zur Unterstützung des Nachhaltigkeitsmarkenmanagements dar.
Traditional farming landscapes have been created in coexistence of rural dwellers and local ecosystems over long time spans, and can be considered tightly coupled ´social-ecological systems´ (SES). Since these landscapes typically embody exceptionally high levels of biological diversity and multiple socio-cultural values, their protection is critical from a sustainability perspective. Due to the pressures of globalization and social change, however, rural livelihoods and farmland biodiversity are at risk. While the focus of research is often on the Southern hemisphere, there are traditional farming landscapes in the former socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) which are equally affected by rapid change, and thus deserve particular attention. Since the institutional breakdown of socialism in 1989, the CEE states have not only been confronted with an unprecedented socio-economic and environmental transition. Their integration into the multi-level governance regime of the European Union (EU) further resulted in the transformation of decision-making structures and competition within the EU common market. In light of the profound changes traditional farming landscapes of Central and Eastern Europe are confronted with, they serve as a valuable source of learning about the institutional design necessary to harmonize socio-economic development and biodiversity conservation within regional social-ecological systems worldwide. This thesis is the result of an in-depth analysis of one traditional farming landscape of Central and Eastern Europe, namely Southern Transylvania (Romania). Based on empirical research involving diverse stakeholder groups, this thesis assessed the impact of EU policy on the area, the institutional features characterizing local-level governance in Southern Transylvania, and the barriers and bridges towards sustainable rural development. This thesis finds that while rural dwellers are highly dependent on smallholder farming and local ecosystems for their livelihoods, Southern Transylvania is currently confronted with a range of structural development barriers. These are likely to be exacerbated by a governance system consisting of historically grounded ´elite social networks´, and by EU policies which often do not fit rural realities. The findings of this dissertation underline that entrenched informal institutions, political will, and historical legacies play a critical role for the governance of traditional social-ecological systems since these ´social system features´ do not only mediate how external policies act on the local level. They may further restrict local adaptive and innovation capacities which, however, are critical for the transformation towards sustainable development. This thesis further finds that there are no blueprint solutions for the design of rural development strategies. Instead, (supra-) national policies should take better account of local socio-economic and cultural particularities.
One of the consequences of the manifold uses of various organic substances in households, agriculture, and industry is that these can eventually end up in the aquatic environment. Each of these anthropogenic substances represents a potential harmful contamination for the different water resources. Therefore, a constant and comprehensive monitoring of organic trace substances in the resources used for drinking water treatment is essential to protect of the quality of drinking water. In addition to the commonly used target screening, the non-target screening with high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) has gained in importance in recent years and became a useful tool for the monitoring of organic trace substances in water This work describes new strategies for the screening and identification of unexpected or unknown organic trace substances in water. The approaches consider all compounds detectable by the used analytical method for further data evaluation. That is the fundamental meaning of non-target screening. However, focusing on relevant contaminants during the screening process is required as large numbers of substances are being detected for each sample. Consequently, a sample is not regarded as an isolated specimen, but rather evaluated in relation to a set of other samples based on considerations of their temporal, spatial, or process-related connections. The efficiency of the different developed strategies were demonstrated successfully for the identification of unknown contaminants in monitoring samples of different water resources as well as for the screening and structural elucidation of ozonation by-products of known contaminants (4- and 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole) of the Danube water. In addition, to effectively support the identification of compounds, the concept of the DAIOS (Database-Assisted Identification of Organic Substances) was introduced. The new described strategies for the screening and identification of organic trace substances in water opens the possibilities of various other applications in environmental analysis, for example in the environmental remediation of contaminated sites, as well as for the evaluation of the process steps during drinking and waste water treatment.
This thesis makes an important contribution to better understanding biodiversity and ecosystem function relationships across trophic levels in forests - aspects that are still underrepresented in BEF research. Ongoing biodiversity loss can be expected to change important trophic interaction pathways in these ecosystems, making increased efforts in exploring the mechanisms underlying, and the drivers determining, the impact of trophic complexity on the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning a crucial objective for holistic approaches to BEF research.
Die Agenda 2030 der Vereinten Nationen und diverse daraus abgeleitete Nachhaltigkeitsstrategien wie beispielsweise die Deutsche Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie (Neuauflage 2016) setzen einen zeitlich fest definierten Rahmen bis in das Jahr 2030. Für die Umsetzung dieser Strategien sind zwei Aspekte entscheidend - ein fundiertes inhaltliches Verständnis von politischer Strategie und ein darauf aufbauendes praxistaugliches Instrument, das den politischen Strategen bei einer erfolgreichen Umsetzung und Implementierung einer Strategie unterstützt. Diese Arbeit möchte zu beiden Aspekten einen Beitrag leisten. Zum einen soll aus der Zusammenführung von Theorie und Praxis die Natur des inhaltlichen politischen Strategiebegriffs erforscht werden und zum anderen soll darauf aufbauend ein praxis- und erfahrungsorientiertes Anwendungsmodell entwickelt werden, das typische potentielle Herausforderungen und entsprechende potentielle Handlungsoptionen je Strategieabschnitt benennt. Durch die Subsumierung von Erfahrungswissen unterstützt das Modell dabei vor allem das praktische Urteilsvermögen des politischen Strategen bei der Erreichung politikstrategischer Ziele. Um zu dem praxisrelevanten Anwendungsmodell zu gelangen ist es notwendig, sich zuvor Klarheit über die besonderen Anforderungen und Herausforderungen des speziellen politischen Strategiebegriffs zu verschaffen. Die politische Umwelt mit ihren spezifischen Mechanismen unterscheidet sich fundamental von den bisher bekannten Strategiefeldern Militär und Betriebswirtschaft. Da eine Strategie immer die konkrete Umweltsituation und die individuellen Situationsmerkmale berücksichtigen muss, ist - wie diese Arbeit zeigen wird - eine simple Übertragung strategischer Allgemeinplätze aus Militär und Ökonomie von vornherein zum Scheitern verurteilt.
