| Abstract | This doctoral dissertation contributes to the research on the writings of John Stuart Mill by examining Mill's rudimentarily formulated figure of thought and research gap of the "Art of Life". The author extends the traditional interpretation of Mill as a classical utilitarian to include a sharpened view of Mill's handling of the ancient theory element of virtue. Three overlapping thematic approaches – pleasure, character, happiness – serve to illustrate and strengthen the thesis that Mill's theory is a hedonistic, perfectionist-tinged theory of the good life. Methodological recourse to Aristotle's conception of pleasure and happiness allows Mill's differentiated conception of pleasure (or joy) to be explored, the role of human character in (moral) action to be established, and eudemic traces in the understanding of happiness to be uncovered. Finally, the dissertation offers an interpretation of Mill's writings as a philosophy of the art of living with moral and non-moral levels and shows connection potentials to ancient, as well as contemporary (art of life) theories. Die Dissertation leistet einen Beitrag zur Erforschung der Schriften John Stuart Mills, indem darin Mills rudimentär ausformulierte Denkfigur und Forschungslücke der "Art of Life" untersucht wird. Die Autorin erweitert die traditionelle Interpretation Mills als klassischem Utilitaristen um einen geschärften Blick auf Mills Handhabung des antiken Theorieelements der Tugend. Drei überlappende thematische Zugänge – Lust, Charakter, Glückseligkeit - dienen der Veranschaulichung und Stärkung der These, wonach es sich bei Mills Theorie um eine hedonistische, perfektionistisch gefärbte Theorie der guten Lebensführung handelt. Der methodische Rückgriff auf die Lust- und Glückskonzeption des Aristoteles erlaubt es Mills differenzierte Auffassung von Lust bzw. Freude zu ergründen, die Rolle des menschlichen Charakters für das (moralische) Handeln festzustellen und eudemische Spuren im Verständnis von Glück aufzudecken. Abschließend bietet die Dissertationsschrift eine Interpretation der Schriften Mills als Lebenskunstphilosophie mit moralischen und außer-moralischen Ebenen und zeigt Anschlusspotentiale zu antiken, sowie zeitgenössischen (Lebenskunst) Theorien auf. |
