| Abstract | The use of a certain locally produced building material is often regarded as distinguishing feature of towns with historic architecture. For northern Germany it is mostly the red brick which is attributed to be characteristic or typical. Terms such as ›Brick Gothic‹ or ›redbrick town‹ underline the importance of the material for architecture and the townscape. Lüneburg in Lower Saxony is one of those ›redbrick towns‹. Bricks have been locally produced and used since the Middle Ages; even for new construction red bricks are the obvious choice of facade material. The present study investigates why brick plays such a significant role for the townscape of Lüneburg. It analyses how this townscape can be explained as a logical consequence of the usage of local raw materials, and to what extent additional circumstances have (had) any influence on the town´s building structure and appearance. In order to include aspects of geology, technology and architecture as well as the temporal changes of social processes of appropriation and their impact, the study makes use of an existing constructivist landscape theory, extends its scope to the historical geographic perspective and transfers this new approach to the term of townscape. Thus hitherto unresolved issues concerning the Lüneburg brick can be answered and causal links be illustrated. Moreover it is made clear how densely the material dimension of ›redbrick Lüneburg‹ and the historicity of its social construction are interwoven. Die Verwendung lokaltypischer Baumaterialien gilt als ein wichtiges prägendes Merkmal von Städten mit historischer Bausubstanz. Für Norddeutschland ist es i. d. R. der sichtbar verbaute rote Backstein, dem diese prägende Wirkung zugeschrieben wird. Mit Begriffen wie ›Backsteingotik‹ oder ›Backsteinstadt‹ wird die herausragende Bedeutung des Materials für Architektur und Stadtbild noch betont. Die niedersächsische Stadt Lüneburg ist eine solche ›Backsteinstadt‹. Backsteine wurden hier schon im Mittelalter hergestellt und verbaut; keine Fassadengestaltung wird auch bei Neubauten als so selbstverständlich angesehen wie die aus rotem Ziegelmaterial. Die vorliegende Arbeit geht der Frage nach, warum das Material Backstein für das Stadtbild von Lüneburg eine so zentrale Rolle spielt. Es wird untersucht inwieweit sich dieses Stadtbild als logische Folge der Nutzung lokal vorhandener Rohstoffe erklären lässt und in welchem Maß weitere Umstände Einfluss auf die Bausubstanz und das Bild der Stadt hatten bzw. haben. Um sowohl rohstoffgeologische, technik- und bauhistorische Aspekte als auch den zeitspezifischen Wandel gesellschaftlicher Aneignungsprozesse und deren Auswirkungen in die Untersuchungen einbeziehen zu können, wird ein bestehender kulturgeographisch-konstruktivistischer Ansatz aus der Landschaftsforschung um eine historisch-geographische Perspektive erweitert und auf den Begriff des Stadtbilds übertragen. Diese Herangehensweise ermöglicht es, bisher ungeklärte Fragen zum Lüneburger Backstein zu beantworten und übergeordnete Zusammenhänge zu verdeutlichen. Darüber hinaus wird klar, wie unauflösbar dicht die physisch-materielle Dimension der Backsteinstadt mit der Historizität ihrer sozialen Konstruktion verwoben ist. |
