N2 - This doctoral dissertation contributes to the research on the writings of John Stuart Mill by examining Mill's rudimentarily formulated figure of thought and research gap of the "Art of Life." The author extends the traditional interpretation of Mill as a classical utilitarian to include a sharpened view of Mill's handling of the ancient theory element of virtue. Three overlapping thematic approaches – pleasure, character, happiness – serve to illustrate and strengthen the thesis that Mill's theory is a hedonistic, perfectionist-tinged theory of the good life. Methodological recourse to Aristotle's conception of pleasure and happiness allows Mill's differentiated conception of pleasure (or joy) to be explored, the role of human character in (moral) action to be established, and eudemic traces in the understanding of happiness to be uncovered. Finally, the dissertation offers an interpretation of Mill's writings as a philosophy of the art of living with moral and non-moral levels and shows connection potentials to ancient, as well as contemporary (art of life) theories.
